Workshop Chronicles: The Birth of a Charming & Practical Kid’s Stool

Workshop Chronicles: The Birth of a Charming & Practical Kid’s Stool

As the woodworker at The Rainbow Splinter here in Clarksville, Texas, I’ve always gravitated toward projects that blend utility with a touch of whimsy. Lately, my workshop has been bustling with a project particularly close to my heart—one that grew directly from a need I spotted in everyday family routines. Today, I’m excited to reveal the first of what I hope will be a delightful new line: the "Just a Little More" stool, handcrafted from reclaimed wood and perfectly sized for little ones.

A Real-Life Solution: Where Function Meets Fun

Every parent knows the scene: a small child standing on tiptoe at the bathroom sink, stretching, straining, needing just a bit more height to reach for toothbrushing or hand-washing. Inspired by this universal challenge, I set out to design a solution that was more than just a stepping stool—a tool that would be sturdy, safe, delightful, and easy for kids to use themselves.

Reclaimed Wood: Embracing Character & Sustainability

At The Rainbow Splinter, I believe every project can tell a story—especially when working with reclaimed materials. Each piece of wood that goes into these stools has a past life, which not only reduces waste but imbues the finished work with unique textures and patina. The result? Every stool is a one-of-a-kind object, rich with character, grain, and warmth that only reclaimed wood can offer.

Upcoming: The Baby Cow (Calf) Stool

For the first edition, I wanted to create an animal motif durable enough to withstand daily use and dear enough to spark young imaginations. Thus, the baby cow (calf) stool was born—playful without being overdone, and instantly engaging for kids. From sturdy & wide painted "hooves" to large rounded ears and a gentle smile, this stool invites giggles while remaining practical.

Features at a Glance:

  • Short & Sturdy: Provides just a few extra inches, perfect for reaching the bathroom sink or kitchen counter.
  • Child-Safe Design: All surfaces are thoughtfully rounded, sanded silky smooth, and finished with toxin-free coatings.
  • Lightweight Mobility: At just the right weight, it’s easy for little ones to move on their own, empowering independence and confidence.
  • Handcrafted Charm: Each calf stool carries individual marks from its reclaimed origin, making no two exactly alike.

The Making Process: Balancing Strength and Playfulness

Designing the "Just a Little More" stool brought together my passion for practical, character-rich woodworking and my love for clever details. After selecting just the right pieces of reclaimed lumber, I focused on proportions—ensuring the stool could safely support an active child but remain light enough for a preschooler to carry. Each edge is being carefully shaped and sanded to avoid snags or bumps.

I'm bringing the little calf theme to life using a combination of wood carving, paint, and shapes to form a playful face and spots, all while prioritizing a sweet & recognizable shape that will be instantly familiar. The legs are wide, rounded and sturdy for stability and will come capped with non-slip pads for safety.

What’s Next?

I’m excited to continue exploring new animal designs and custom options as this line evolves. Your feedback shapes the direction of my work—so if you have a favorite animal, color palette, or specific need, let me know! Every project is an opportunity to blend the practical with the magical.
